The bottom drying stone protects the counter surface from getting wet and sponges, etc. dry in a reasonable amt. of time. I debated getting this longer one, but I am glad I did because it fits quite a bit. I even use the one side with the partition for a spray bottle. It also looks very nice and feels like a quality product. I wasn't sure if the black metal would go well with my beige countertop, but it looks great. I highly recommend it.
